A group show of 40 artists - all former Portfolio course students - exhibiting work at HCA, in celebration of the popular pathway for mature students.
The artists exhibiting have been very generous in sharing their own experiences of the Portfolio Course and these will be displayed alongside their work. An overarching message is that the Portfolio Course offers an opportunity for creative and personal growth, a chance to learn a little bit more about yourself and experiment with artistic practices within a supportive community.

Explore our Open EventsI loved the portfolio course – being in a creative environment, the social aspect, learning new skills and experimenting with new media. My passion had always been photography, but I wanted to try out everything on offer and used every workshop. I discovered a love for painting and printing again as well as discovering the sort of photographic images I liked to take.
Tottie Aarvold - Portfolio Course, 2012-12
A friend had completed the Portfolio Course, and it sounded so interesting that I was inspired to apply in 2015. I found the portfolio year so rewarding that I decided to continue my artistic journey on the BA Fine Art course, completed part time over 6 years from 2016/22. I returned to complete the journey with the MA in Fine Art, graduating in 2024.
Andrea Davis - Portfolio course, 2015-16
The Course was creatively extremely stimulating. I was introduced to a wide range of techniques, processes and materials for creating art. It was a ‘full on’ course that opened my mind to a world of creative expression.
Paul Butler - Portfolio 2022-23
Before embarking on the portfolio course, my professional background was in law - I worked as a barrister in Colombia, representing members of the government in criminal and disciplinary investigations. The course proved to be incredibly refreshing for both my mind and soul. I had the opportunity to work with invaluable tutors and teachers, develop new artistic techniques, and acquire skills that significantly shaped my creative practice.
