Victor Barratt

2026 Degree Show - brand design by Dan Harris

BA(hons) Illustration

About the artist:

I am an all-rounder with a keen interest in the haptic image and post-memory landscapes.

My work is grounded in contextual and academic research and realised through intensive narrative study; it is my belief the quietest images tell us far more than appeals to aesthetics.

About this project:

Multimedia zines including photography, illustration, and small-scale ceramics. This project spans various mediums to probe and express the tension between tourist/military lenses and residents throughout visual discourses of the Pacific (in this case, Okinawa), exploring the camera and reportage illustration’s ability to idealise and restrict the greater context of land.

Inspired by my own lived experience, much of the work deals with absence, and the way that popular tourist destinations transform outside of peak seasons. Abstracted detail shots and focuses on textures ground the destination in haptic memory.

Themes explored in this project

  • Palimpsest
  • Haptic image
  • Absence
  • Postcolonial theory
