Thomas Ablett: Student Accommodation Q+A

BA(Hons) Graphic & Media Design student Thomas Ablett talks through his experience living in student accommodation at No.1 Station Approach in Hereford.

Why did you decide to move in?

So I live about 40 minutes away and when I decided I was coming to college, I was thinking, well, I want to move out [of home] so the halls were the obvious solution.

What does a typical day or evening look like in the accommodation for you?

I get up, I go sit on the sofas. I then work for ages and then kind of ever so often people come in, play pool, so I go and join them or they go and play music and I kind of sit, chat, talk to them and then do more work or go to bed on the odd occasion.

We get good parties going on; like on Halloween, we had a fancy dress party, everyone dressed up, we all had music and we also did a cancer research for fundraising thing as well here.

What advice would you offer to someone that was thinking about moving into the accommodation?

I'd do it. I think it's a lot easier process than trying to find a student housing place in Hereford other than here.

And if you like living on your own, go for the studio option - if you like being a bit more with people, then flats are perfect.

Have you made friends directly from sharing some accommodation with them?

I've definitely made friends from sharing the accommodation here. It really pushes kind of different courses and different years to join together - I've made really good friends with first year blacksmiths and first year graphic designers as well.

How have you found the location?

It is convenient, especially having Morrisons right next to us and the high street, just being around the corner.

Going up to college, it's about a 20-minute walk, depending on how quick you walk.

Do you enjoy living with your peers?

I definitely enjoy living with my peers. It's nice to see because although we're different years, we're still at similar points within our kind of creative career. We're all at the start, we're all figuring it out. If I'm really ever struggling with typefaces, I know that person is perfect for typefaces, so I can just go to them.
