Marking a return to her blacksmithing roots, Lisa Wisdom joined us at Hereford College of Arts to introduce her charcoal forge. Inspired by a desire to reduce the carbon footprint of her practice and to modernise the use of charcoal as a suitable and sustainable fuel for forging, Lisa has developed the forge as a project that looks to make blacksmithing affordable, environmentally engaging, and portable.

These charcoal forges help us to start addressing the environmental impact of the craft of blacksmithing as it has become since the industrial era. Using locally sourced, sustainable charcoal as fuel helps steer the craft towards a new and resilient future for the next generation of blacksmiths.

Lisa Wisdom, Artist Blacksmith

Lisa visited the art college in November 2025, first to demonstrate her forge to the Artist Blacksmith students and staff at the Hive in Hereford, before relocating to the workshops at Holme Lacey to oversee MA Forged Metal Arts students in the construction of six portable Wisdom charcoal forges.

Collaborating with Lisa Wisdom to construct the six charcoal forges provided a fascinating insight into sustainable forging practices. From the lightweight, portable design to the off-grid bellows specifically configured for charcoal, the entire process was a valuable learning experience.

Funding for the forges was supplied by Herefordshire UKSPF Cultural Programming Grant Scheme 2025–26.

Collaborating with the Cart Shed and Lisa Wisdom to create six charcoal forges has been truly inspiring. With invaluable support from the Herefordshire UKSPF Cultural Programming Grant Scheme 2025–26, Hereford College of Arts, and the National School of Blacksmithing, we have built the forges and begun offering hands-on forging experiences to young people. These sessions spark creativity, build confidence, and enhance well-being. It has been a privilege to see our students bring Lisa’s visionary forges to life and engage with new audiences. The workshops beautifully demonstrate the transformative power of making, and we are deeply committed to expanding this outreach—welcoming more schools, charities, and individuals to discover the joys of forging.
