A second successful year

Hosted at the Brockington House Care Community, this competition marked its second successful year, following an inaugural event that was the first of its kind organised by a care home in the UK.

What was the day all about?

The senior residents, part of the Dormy Care Communities, spent a day modelling for the young artists, who utilized diverse mediums such as charcoal, paints, ink, and digital tools to create their portraits.

A distinguished judging panel, featuring local artist Mark Stewart of Sunrise Giants, Brockington House Home Director Shann Thomas, and Dormy Care Communities Chief Executive Helen Davies-Parsons, evaluated the artworks.

After thoughtful deliberation, the title of Portrait Artist of the Year was awarded to 16-year-old Gwen Gillick for her evocative pencil drawings of three residents. Gwen received a £150 Hobbycraft voucher. Runners-up Georgie Wixey and Iris Smith were also honoured with vouchers for their remarkable contributions.

Gwen expressed her joy, saying, “I couldn’t believe it when my name was read out because the standard of work among everyone taking part was so high. I am delighted that my drawings were so well received. It was lovely sitting with the residents and finding out about them and their individual characters, which I was then able to use in my work.”

Mark Stewart, from Sunrise Giants, praised the participants, stating, “The work produced this year was exceptional and it was pleasing to see such high levels of confidence in the students and their unique individual styles. It made the judging incredibly difficult.”

Helen Davies-Parsons, Chief Executive of Dormy Care Communities, added, “It was lovely listening to the conversations between the students and our residents and then to view such impressive work from such a talented group of individuals.”

Kay Rambaud, Curriculum Leader at Hereford College of Arts, shared her enthusiasm: “We were delighted to be able to come back to take part in the competition again this year. The students really showcased their range of creative skills and it’s done wonders for their self-confidence.”

This event not only celebrated artistic talent but also fostered meaningful connections across generations, enriching the lives of both the students and the residents.
