Welcome to MA Forged Metal Arts at HCA

We are delighted that you have chosen to join one of our making degrees—whether Artist Blacksmithing, Contemporary Design Crafts, Jewellery Design, or one of our master’s programmes in Contemporary Crafts or Forged Metal Arts. My team and I are looking forward to welcoming you to the College Road Campus this September as you begin an exciting new chapter filled with creativity, experimentation, discovery, and possibility.

During your time here, you will be encouraged to push your ideas further, refine your skills, and develop your own creative voice through a wide range of ambitious and engaging projects. You will also have opportunities to hear from inspiring professionals across the creative industries, helping you to imagine where your practice could take you and how your work might contribute to the world around you.

Beyond your chosen programme, you will become part of a wider creative community where collaboration, curiosity, and exchange are central to learning. Interdisciplinary opportunities across the School of Materials & Design and the wider college will invite you to test new approaches, learn from others, broaden your perspective, and build connections that support both your confidence and your creative ambition.

At Hereford College of Arts, we are proud to offer a personalised and supportive approach to teaching. You will receive individual attention, thoughtful guidance, and the encouragement to take creative risks, respond positively to challenges, and grow with confidence as a designer, maker, and individual.

In your first few weeks, we will help you settle into your programme, the studios and workshops, and the wider college community. You do not need to arrive with everything fully formed or figured out; what matters most is that you bring your curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to explore. Our staff will be there to guide and encourage you as you begin to find your place, develop your ideas, and make the most of the opportunities ahead.

In summary, your time with us will be shaped by creative exploration, practical skill development, supportive teaching, and a strong sense of community. We hope you will feel inspired to experiment boldly, collaborate generously, ask questions, and embrace the opportunities available to you as you begin this next stage of your creative journey.

We wish you an enjoyable summer and look forward to welcoming you in September. If you have any questions or need any support before your arrival, please do not hesitate to reach out—we are here to help you feel ready, confident, and excited for the journey ahead.

Enjoy this time before you arrive, and begin to imagine the ideas, skills, and creative confidence you will develop with us. We are excited to see what you will bring to the community and how your practice will grow during your time at Hereford College of Arts.

Warm regards,

Del Done MBE, CWCB
