Welcome to the Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Fashion Business & Retail
Course Information
Most of the work that you do will be developed and recorded on a digital platform, however over the duration of the course and depending on your area of specialism you may need additional items for your studies. We have included links to examples of the materials you could purchase.
Stationery & Equipment
On the first day we will only need YOU, however you may like to bring some or all of the following to support creative practice:
- Pencils* - Example
- Fine liners of varying thickness* - Example
- Coloured markers for illustrations - Example
- Washi tape/Masking tape* - Example
- A glue stick* - Example
- Double sided tape* - Example
- Scissors* / craft knife or scalpel - Example
- Metal Ruler - Example
- A small cutting matt - Example
- A notebook/sketch book to take notes and develop ideas* - Example
- Most students are happy to use the cameras on their phones for everyday work, however you will have the opportunity to use HCA cameras and other equipment during the course (you do not need to buy an expensive camera, computer or ipad)
Please clearly label all items with a permanent marker pen.
Please note – the items marked by an asterisk (*) are available from the college shop, which is located in Reception at the Folly Lane campus. Opening hours during term time are:
Monday – Thursday: 8.30am – 4.30pm
Friday: 8.30am – 4pm

To make sure you are prepared on enrolment day, here is a checklist of everything you will need:
Course Structure
Unit 1: Principles of fashion business and retail
Unit 2: Communication for fashion business and retail
Unit 3: Critical and contextual awareness
Unit 4: Fashion production and supply chain
Unit 5: Fashion buying and merchandising
Unit 6: Fashion management and marketing
Unit 7: Visual merchandising for fashion retail
Unit 8: Collaborative fashion retail project
Please note – students will be reviewed in the first six weeks of each year to assess their academic progress.
Students and their parents/carers will be invited to HCA within the first month of study to meet the team, see the studios, view student work and to learn more about course content and expectations.
Students aged 16-18 who have not achieved grade 4/C or above in GCSE English Language or English Literature and/or Maths will be required to study either GCSE or Functional Skills at an appropriate level as part of their course.

Unit 11: Fashion futures and sustainability
Unit 12: Project proposal in fashion business and retail
Unit 13: Extended project in fashion business and retail
