Biography

Epha J. Roe is a research-based contemporary artist specialising in photography. As a photographer with an expanded practice, Epha’s approach to teaching welcomes innovative, experimental and alternative ways of thinking about and practising photography.

Bio

Epha’s practice broadly concerns the relationship between humans and the wider natural world with a specialist interest in the cultural history of individual plant species. Working at the intersection of science, art and history, Epha’s practice often incorporates other media such as sound, text, sculpture and living plants to explore the complexity of human-nature relationships. This interest also extends to sustainability in photography which has materialised in an on-site photography garden at HCA.

They hold a BA in Photography & Video from De Montfort University, an MA in Art History and Museum Curating with Photography from the University of Sussex, and a practice-based PhD from the University of Brighton.

Alongside their art practice, Epha is a published researcher on subjects such as photographic theory, history and practice; queer ecology; the cultural history of the oak tree; contemporary curatorial methods and LGBT+ representation in museums and archives.
