Wally trained at West Sussex School of Art and Design and then at Chelsea College of Art. He started his creative career teaching jewellery as an associate lecturer in art, design and jewellery, including a period of teaching part-time at Hereford College of Arts. He is an artist and designer who can technically and creatively work in most disciplines and materials, while retaining his own style. Earlier on his career his commercial work was predominately in jewellery.
Wally has exhibited in galleries in both the UK and abroad including New York and at the V&A, and during the 80’s he worked part-time for Goldsmith and Architect Louis Osman. In the 90’s Wally focussed on silversmithing and was awarded Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and City of London for his ‘Shadows’ series of solo exhibitions.
Since 2000 Wally has taken up residencies across a range of disciplines in Australia and the United States. He was also commissioned by De Beers to design a diamond trophy for Ascot, and in 2007 he was Artist in Residence at Hereford College of Arts.
Wally has been awarded for his work in silversmithing, ironwork, ceramics, cast aluminium and print-making both in the UK and internationally – In 2012, he was awarded a Gold prize from the Goldsmiths Craft Council. His work continues to be regularly featured in books and magazines and although he now works predominantly to one-off commissions for clients, Wally insists that he is still striving to find out what he wants to do!
