How to buy work at the Degree Show

Tips on buying work at the Degree Show or commissioning graduates.

The Degree Show 2025

The Degree Show is a great chance to buy or commission work from emerging artists.

We know that for many visitors, this might be a new experience so we have pulled together some tips on how to go about it.

1. It's okay to ask

If you're not sure if a piece of work is for sale or not, just ask.

The show is staffed by a mix of students and staff but anyone with a lanyard will be able to help.

Some pieces may be marked with a small coloured sticker to indicate they have been bought already - but that may not always be the case. If you like something, just ask if it's available to buy.

2. You will be buying from the artist, not the college

Buying work is a fantastic way to support graduates early in their careers, and secure an original piece from a new artist or designer.

Any purchase would be directly with the artist - and they would get the full proceeds of the sale.

If you are interested in buying a piece of work, talk to the individual about pricing and how to arrange payment - or ask if they have an online shop you can buy from in your own time.

3. It's never too late

If you get home and wish you had enquired about a piece - or if a specific artist was unavailable to talk to during your visit - all is not lost.

While there is no online shop for the Degree Show, there will be an online showcase, where all exhibiting artists list their professional websites and preferred contact details.

You can also email enquiries@hca.ac.uk and the team can put you in touch with a staff member to  connect you with the students.

Different ways to buy work, commission art or work with grads

Buy a single item

This is pretty straightforward. You see a piece you like, agree a price with the artist and collect it or arrange delivery following the show.

Commission a piece

The showcase will give a sense of the individual style, interests and technical skills of the exhibiting artists and designers. Most artists will accept commissions, and if you have a specific project in mind talk to the graduate or arrange a follow-up conversation to discuss if it would be a good match. It always helps to be able to discuss the scope of a project, and the budget, early on.

Hire a graduate

Some of the designers and artists exhibiting may be available for freelance work - or for looking for permanent roles post-graduation. If you are an employer or have a freelance project that you need creative talent for, the show is a great place to find help. If students aren't on-site, staff will help put you in touch.

Buying merchandise

Some courses may be selling smaller items that you can purchase at the show to take home with you. Examples would be graphic tees or prints. These will be available to buy using credit or debit cards.

Buy a collection

Similar to buying a single item, if you want to buy a full collection or series of work - this may be an option. Talk the artists about availability and any discount available for a larger order.
