This week we were delighted to have had a fantastic visitor. Michael McFalls is a professor for sculpture at Columbus State University, Georgia. He is currently on a Fulbright-funded sabbatical at Steneby in Sweden, learning about the craft of blacksmithing and how to integrate this into his current practice.

As Sweden is so much closer than Columbus, we took the opportunity to invite him to give several lectures about his practice and to give tutorials to second and third year Artist Blacksmith students.

A running theme throughout his work is a love of materials.  From bronze plaster through to cast rubbish and fabricated steel, his ideas often reflecting his location. He talked passionately about collaboration and how to work with artists and designers from different disciplines and the students thoroughly enjoyed his visit with many of those who had the chance to talk to him about their work, absolutely buzzing with enthusiasm!
