Holland and Will kicked off this new “academic get together” session today as they each chose a journal article or piece of academic writing that had been pivotal to their creative practice. We are all continuing to underpin and inform our projects with research, reading and analysis of academic sources but this was also a chance to have a conversation about it too.

The sharing of information with others in order to stimulate engagement and exchange of ideas led to reflection, interesting discussions and insight into each other’s thinking and practice. Holland discussed ideas linked to “liminal space” and “disconnection” as presented in the paper “Liminality, art therapy and childhood sexual abuse” by Sarah Louise Haywood (published in the International Journal of Art Therapy, July 2012) which has informed and continues to inform, her practice, making and writing on the MA.

Will Hughes focused on the work of Hussein Chalayan to illustrate and discuss physical space and structure in relation to the body and fashion as architecture as discussed in “The Fashion of Architecture” by Bradley Quinn (published by BERG 2003). His jewellery which explores structure, space and locates itself in connection to the body, uses industrial, architectural, building materials such as concrete, aggregates and metal.
