Rather than a course, these are guided sessions in a social environment, where all creative approaches and techniques are welcomed, and we find inspiration from one other’s work.
With a portrait model each week and plenty of support and guidance, individual students will be encouraged to explore and develop their own styles.
We will experiment with a broad range of techniques and wide variety of media (oils, acrylics, watercolour, egg tempera, pen and ink, charcoal and pencil, etc) and discover various ‘limited colour palettes’ to aid and develop our understanding of colour theory and mixing, whilst observing the styles of master portraitists for inspiration.
Advice will be offered about techniques we can practice in our own time and any materials we may need to purchase to create individual ‘tool ‘kits’. We provide basic brushes and acrylic paint colours, paper, pencils, charcoal, etc, but students are invited to bring their own materials (oils, canvas, pastels, brushes, palettes, mediums, cleaning mediums, etc).
Students should have some previous experience or have completed one of Lexi’s introductions to life drawing, drawing or painting courses.
Lexi completed her MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in 2014 and her degree in Fine Art at Hereford College of Arts in 2011. Primarily a painter, she also creates theatrical installations that animate her work, and is a trained art clown performer, regularly creating performances that span the art, theatre and comedy world’s.
Current work includes a series of portraits of her diverse clown community, and she was recently funded by the Arts Council, England to explore the relationship between humour and trauma.
She frequently exhibits and performs nationally and internationally, including the John Moores painting prize and the Jerwood Drawing prize. Lexi was also nominated for Saatchi New Sensations (2014) and Shortlisted for New Contemporaries (2013). Her paintings are on permanent display at the New Hall Art collection at Cambridge University.
Bookings for our Autumn (October) short courses will open on 7th August 2023, 11am.
