Student Union

The last twelve months have been very important for the HCA Student Union. We’ve laid some great foundations and we’re now in a great position to build for future years. It all began with our first ever full Freshers Week back in September.

All new students were given a free Freshers Week T-shirt to start the week, and this created a real sense of community from the outset as students could recognise each other. We’ve also launched ‘Palette’ – our student newspaper which has gone from strength to strength, and is set to become bigger and better next year as we get advertisers involved and a student team to run the paper.

There have been a few social nights to remember throughout the year, the highlight of which has got to be Pub Golf tournament which took place back in November, although whether or not anyone can remember anything from that night is another matter!

The Union has been involved with numerous band nights throughout the year, and finished 2007 by putting hip-hop star Lethal Bizzle on at The Jailhouse club in town for a sold-out Student Christmas party. In February, the Student Union hosted a Valentines Masquerade Ball at the Left Bank Village which was very well attended, and July will see the College’s first ever Graduation ball.

In March, the Student Union had it’s first ever foreign trip, taking 50 students to New York for five action-packed days. The group visited numerous galleries and exhibitions, as well as all the tourist and shopping hotspots!

Another great success for the Student Union this year has been the launch of our student hoodies. Designed by our own BA (Hons) Graphics students, the hoodies have sold in the hundreds, with 1 in 4 students having purchased them. They are so popular in fact, that quite a large number of the general public have also purchased them (local Tory candidate Jesse Norman being one of them!). We are now looking forward to the next year, planning our Freshers activities, a ski trip, and doing a feasibility study into a new student café.

We are pleased to announce that Polly Williams has been elected as Student President for the 2009-10 academic year, and will begin her post with immidiate effect.
