Title: Book Arts Showcase at Oxfam Bookstore

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

Book Arts Showcase at Oxfam Book & Music Store in Broad Street, Hereford

Once again, students from HCA students have really pushed the boundaries and explored the notion of Book Arts. The annual competition and exhibition, overseen by Guy Begbie, our Book Arts Co-ordinator, encourages all students and staff – across all media to submit their interpretation of how a book can become an object and a work of art. This year is no exception and as well as the competition resulting in an exhibition at Folly Lane – a selection of ‘books’ will also be on view at Oxfam Book & Music Store in Broad Street, Hereford – a selection of submissions by students from our Level 2 & Level 3 Art & Design courses.

The work will be on display in the shop from Sat 19 May for 2 weeks – so if you are popping in to Hereford library on Broad Street – do pop in and take a look.

The annual Book Arts exhibition will continue until 25 May at Hereford College of Arts, Folly Lane

Title: Take One...Bell

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

Take One…Bell

The Take One ...project is inspired by the
National Gallery's ‘Take One Picture’ project.

Over the centuries legends have been told about the Marden Bell, and few facts are known about it, but similar bells are known to have been carried by Celtic missionaries. There is also evidence to suggest that such bells might have been revered as sacred objects. Pupils from seven schools and students from the Hereford College of Arts have been involved with the project. Their work, along with the Marden Bell itself, will be displayed in the South Transept of Hereford Cathedral from Saturday June 2nd – Saturday June 16th

Participating students from 1 year Extended Diploma in Art & Design have created some striking and contemporary interpretations of the celtic bell.

Title: Belief-An Exploration

Subject: Exhibition

Description: Hereford College of Arts Extended Diploma Students and St John’s Methodist Church are pleased to announce the opening of ‘Belief’—An Exploration, an exhibition of student work, on Tuesday 27th March at 2PM. The artworks on display were made in response to conversations held between parishioners and students around the ideas of belief.

The students have worked hard to visually interpret their views in a thoughtful and respectful manner. Their works address a wide range of topics from abortion and euthanasia to celebrity culture.

Reverend David Meachem, who instigated this brief as an opportunity for students to work within a local community, is impressed with the results. He says, ‘Belief is not an easy concept to portray. Solutions that are affirming or comforting might be bland, whereas the cutting edge approach might shock or offend. Mounting an exhibition on ‘belief’ in a place of worship could be risky but is worth it if the piece says something worthwhile and has integrity. This exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into the minds of young artists as they bring their own unique interpretations.’

‘Belief’ can be seen at St John’s Methodist Church on Owen Street. Opens Tuesday 27th March at 2PM. Wednesday to Thurday the exhibition can be visited between 11AM and 6PM. Exhibition runs until Friday 30th, March, closing at 4PM.

Description:

Three of our BA (Hons) Illustration students have formed the collective, Little Boxes. They have installed a large exhibition at the Hereford Deli. THis is the first public outing of the collective's work. Little Boxes' members are Stephanie Moulden, Suzanne Booten, and Jo Parker.

In their own words, they describe their installation: "This exhibition is the collective work of three third year BA Hons Illustration students. We go by the name of Little Boxes. We've created an installation mainly made of recycled cardboard. We wanted to create something that was a self indulgent escape from our busy lives as we finish our degrees. It's full of hope, exploration, and adventure."

The exhibition runs until 3rd March.

Title: AA2A 2012

Subject: Exhibition

Description:

Hereford College of Arts is delighted to be showcasing the work of 4 talented artists in residence, as part of the AA2A Scheme. For the last eleven years, the College has been part of this highly successful project, enabling artists and craftspeople to work on their own projects or research within the workshops and studios of the College. It provides students with a unique opportunity to observe and learn from practising artists who in turn have been able to access the colleges’ specialist workshops and facilities.

Hereford College of Arts is one of a selection of Colleges in the UK chosen for the scheme called, ‘Artists Access to Art Colleges’ (AA2A), now in its twelfth year – it is funded by the Arts Council England through the National Lottery Grants for the Arts programme.

This year, 4 artists have been working at the College as part of this scheme:

Michael Birch -Textiles
Jain McKay - Books
Alan Hughes - Prints
Tessa Waite – Animation

The AA2A project for 2012 is now ending and will be celebrated with an exhibition of work from all 4 artists, at Hereford College of Arts and open to the public from 18 April to 3rd May, 2012 - Open times are Monday to Friday, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm.

For more details on the AA2A scheme visit www.aa2a.org

Artist Statements

Alan Hughes
The Artist’s Access scheme (AA2A) has afforded me invaluable access to specialist printmaking facilities, which I have used to explore the pictorial and narrative potential of “multiples”, using, as my starting point, familiar, mass-produced items, such as bottle tops and vacuum-formed blister packs.

The subsequent body of work generated through experimentation with printmaking techniques has provided me with a rich source of visual material, which I am continuing to process and refine.

The images on display represent work produced at the College between January and March 2012 and are part of a larger body of work in progress.

Jain McKay
AA2A was a chance for me to do two things, firstly I had a specific project I wanted to complete. A book that I had decided to work on just a few weeks before the AA2A opportunity came up and secondly I wanted to play and experiment with printmaking, images, size, mixing media and trying alternative formats. While making lots of mistakes along the way I managed to do all this and more. I found out more about myself, how I work, what I like, what I can do and what I canʼt do. It was an incredibly useful process and I come away from it a lot more skilled and with some great finished work. The project Melia and the Quest is a small book about how we try different things to fill our inner feeling of emptiness.

Tessa Waite: I thought I saw you
During my AA2A project at the college I made a series of experimental animated films and collage works on paper. With no set outcome in mind I worked intuitively on each animation with drawing and collaged elements, making changes as they suggested themselves. I allowed a series of images to reveal themselves, to develop and change, which set up an intriguing dialogue between myself and my imagery.

The process of stop frame animation was both frustrating in its slowness and liberating in allowing me to work playfully to create a shifting series of transitions. This has offered me a new way to investigate the subtle and on-going changes in ourselves and our relationships that are core themes in my work.

I also made a film, 'Something strange about the house' in response to a short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' written by Charlotte Gilman Perkins in 1890. The eerie story follows the central character who is being subjected to a particular treatment for her post natal depression which constitutes being isolated in a room with crazy yellow wallpaper. In some ways I could associate with her on-going madness, as I too felt incarcerated in the windowless photography studio with my own inner ramblings!

A similar intuitive approach is evident in the series of collaged works on paper that combine found elements, drawing, print and photographs.

I would like to thank Nick Brown and Nick Beresford-Poole in particular for their help and encouragement in the making of the animations, and the college as a whole for this opportunity.
