Course

This course is about film-making, and provides a great basis from which to enter the audio-visual industries in a wide range of roles. Through an experience of the production of shorts from conception to final showing and distribution, students will gain a good understanding of the process and the context in which the industry operates.

The course encourages students to explore film and video in critical and innovative ways. We will particularly encourage you to develop ideas, visual styles and approaches that attempt to offer new and alternative images and sounds, different narrative visions and ideas about fiction and about society.

You will learn the importance of collaborative teamwork common in the world of film, television and video practice and will be working predominantly in small groups on a wide range of projects. The emphasis throughout is on the development and communication of ideas through the medium of digital film and video.

Structure

Year One provides an intensive introduction to the fundamentals of digital film and video production and film theory. Students are introduced to the key film concepts, film language, methods, techniques and skills necessary for the interpretation, analysis and production of moving image ideas. You will engage in a broad range of introductory workshops, including for example workshops in Scriptwriting, Camera, Sound, Editing, Directing, Producing, and Production Design. Practical studio sessions are underpinned by a carefully linked theory programme exploring the narrative structures of Hollywood and British cinema and applying film theory to the process of creating short films.

In Year Two students apply their skills and understanding to more complex film and video ideas and are introduced to more advanced skills and techniques in preparation for gaining future employment. The fundamental skills developed in the first year including camerawork, sound recording, lighting and shooting and editing a short film are further developed. Students are increasingly expected to engage with more complex themes and cultural representation and to develop a greater understanding of film aesthetics, story and character.

Studio projects involving team working and problem solving are supported by a series of regular live project briefs in which students will work directly with clients, as well as visits to film studios and media organisations in order to provide students with an understanding of work experience associated with commercial and professional practice. Intellectual skills are developed through formal lectures and a "media arts" discourse in which "real" and "theoretical" case studies are presented and analysed.

After Your Foundation Degree

Students who complete this course should be qualified to successfully gain a wide range of employment within the audio – visual industries. They will be equipped with a broad range of abilities and should have the facility to work across the spectrum from creative practitioners to technical specialists. They could for example work as independent film or video makers or collaboratively in small teams providing creative solutions to independent producers, developing ideas, working as editors, project managers or in the production environment as technical coordinators or assistants. Students may also progress onto an appropriate one-year top –up course in order to gain a BA(Hons) qualification.
