If you are thinking of a career in performing arts but are not sure yet, or you enjoyed performing arts subjects at school and would like to build your confidence before taking that next step, then this is the course for you.
The course is an excellent opportunity to give you an insight into a potential career pathway, and a springboard to the next step. Whether you intend to stay in education or go straight into your chosen field of employment, this course will provide a strong foundation to help you achieve.
Staff are or have been practicing professionals in many aspects of the Performing Arts including performance art, choreography, research, community theatre, acting, singing and directing, so you can be sure your tutors have lots of experience within the industry which is at your disposal.
The College has been teaching performing arts for over 25 years. Studying performing arts as part of a highly creative arts college environment is very rewarding, with plenty of collaboration with other courses such as Music and Media Arts. The course is delivered alongside our Extended Diploma in Performing Arts in an extremely creative environment based around the Folly Arts Theatre and our newly fitted professional standard dance studio.
All the subjects that students undertake work together to combine a solid foundation, that provide practical performance skills and technical abilities which culminates in a major public performance project at the end of the academic year.
Careers advice is offered at the end of terms one (Certificate) and three (Diploma), to advise students on which path to pursue next. On successful completion, the majority of students progress to the Extended Diploma in Performing Arts course.
Term one is made up of four units which includes developing skills in acting, dance and personal development. This follows on with an additional six units in term two and three which further develops the skills learned over the first term, and include the option to specialise in the final term in either Acting, Dance or Music.
Students will complete their studies at the end of term one and achieve an Introductory Certificate in Performing Arts. Upon successful completion of this qualification, and in consultation with tutors, it is anticipated that most students will progress onto Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts and complete their studies at the end of term three.
Practical classes and tutorials are delivered over three and a half days of the week, leaving plenty of study-time to complete supporting research and written tasks. Units are delivered through practical performance projects which are assessed at the end of each term and through an on-going monitoring of progress, together with supporting written tasks. Attendance and application to all areas is essential for successful completion.
Educational trips are planned to see a varied selection of performance work including cutting edge contemporary performances in dance, drama and musical theatre, as well as a programme of workshops by professional companies.
On completion of the course, you will have developed your self-confidence, presentation skills, leadership and team-working potential. As well as a personal career plan and improved performance skills you will also have a deeper understanding of this challenging but exciting industry.
Students who complete the course have gone on to study Sport, Outdoor Pursuits, Beauty, Childcare and entered employment as well as the majority who continue to pursue their studies in Performing Arts on our National Diploma course.
