Information about Accommodation
for Students in Hereford

For full time students coming from outside of Herefordshire, the College of Technology and the College of Arts jointly have a comprehensive accommodation service which put students in touch with accommodation providers who offer accommodation locally either in their own homes or in shared student houses.

Student accommodation in Hereford is generally considered to be of a high standard and good value. The Accommodation Officer plays an active role in liasing with landlords, inspecting properties, and offering advice to both students and landlords in order to ensure that there is sufficient good and affordable accommodation, with particular attention being paid to health and safety issues. The aim is to ensure that at least minimum standards are adhered to, but standards are often much higher.

However staff in the Accommodation Department are unable to accept any responsibility for the quality or price of the accommodation offered and it is up to the students themselves to ensure that the accommodation they book is of an acceptable standard.

Lists of accommodation are sent out to students upon receipt of a completed accommodation requirements form (to download the accommodation form and information sheet, please click on the blue left-hand link ), from the beginning of June or as soon as the accommodation providers have registered with the Accommodation Service and have told us where vacancies are available. These lists will be accompanied by a pack of information informing students how to look for and book their accommodation. If students have not been sent a form from the college they are applying to, these can either be picked up from the Accommodation Office, or sent out upon request.

Students are advised to select at least two or three properties to look at in order to compare and contrast. They should then ring up the landlords and make appointments to come and view the accommodation. It is advisable to do this as soon as possible after receiving the lists. When looking for accommodation it is important to bring enough money to pay the deposit so as to secure the accommodation. Further details of the whole procedure will be sent out with the lists. It is advisable to book accommodation as soon as possible in order to avoid disappointment as last year demand outstripped supply.

If you are looking for accommodation after the academic year has started then please either phone, e-mail or visit the Accommodation Office. Vacancies do crop up for different reasons during the year, and new accommodation is taken on all through the year. The Accommodation Office is open throughout the year, but it is advisable to make an appointment if you wish to see the Accommodation Officer as a large proportion of her time is spent out of the office visiting properties and new landlords to ensure there is sufficient accommodation.

There are three types of accommodation available:-

Shared Student Houses (Self-Catering) available only to students who will be over 18 at the beginning of the Autumn Term)

Students rent a room in a house and share the living room, kitchen and bathroom with other students. Most houses will accommodate four students, some are smaller, and one takes nine students. Rent is based on a 42-week contract from 1 September to 30 each year. (N.B. This date applies regardless of the start dates of courses attending).

Rent ranges on average between £45 - £65 per week, and some of these might be inclusive of bills. Rent is therefore paid throughout this 42-week period. When booking accommodation you will probably need to pay a £150 damage deposit which is refundable at the end of the tenancy at the landlord’s discretion providing no unreasonable damage has occurred and all bills and rent is up to date.

Rent is either paid two months in advance, or termly in advance. You are strongly advised to read any contracts very carefully before signing, taking note of what the terms and period of notice are. Landlords will not usually consider students who are under 18 for this type of accommodation as they are not legally able to sign a contract.

Home Share (Self-Catering)
Students rent a single room in the resident owner’s home on a self-catering basis, sharing the kitchen, bathroom, etc with the owner. The owner could be a single person or a family, and some have other students in the house as well. This type of accommodation is popular with students who prefer a bit of independence.

It works out cheaper than Student House Share as all the bills are paid by the home-owner, who will also provide basic essentials such as loo paper, washing-up liquid, dustbin bags, etc and rent is not payable during holiday periods as long as the landlord is told in advance. Many will just ask for a small retainer of about £20 a week during holiday times. Typical costs are from £40 to £60 per week, and rent is usually payable weekly or fortnightly in advance. One or two weeks’ notice is usually required if students want to leave.

Lodgings (Catered Accommodation)
This type of accommodation is particularly suitable for the younger (i.e. 16 – 18 year olds) who are not eligible for Houseshare accommodation, or for those who may be travelling home every weekend because of family and/or work commitments. It is also used for students on ‘block release’ courses, such as the apprentices from the Farriery Training Service, and appreciate a cooked meal every evening!

Students rent a single bedroom in the resident owner’s home and are provided with breakfast and evening meal on either a 4, 5 or 7 night basis. Some lodgings have other students in the house as well. 7 nights lodgings is at a premium, and it is advised to book this as soon as possible. Typical rent is on average £15 - £17 per night and rent is payable either weekly or fortnightly in advance. As in homeshare, rent is not payable during holidays and work experience periods as long as the accommodation provider is informed beforehand, where a retainer will be required.

Residential Bursaries

Support is intended to provide financial assistance to learners who would otherwise be prevented from attending a Further Education Course.

Applicants will normally have had to move to Hereford from outside Herefordshire in order to continue their education. Most applicants will be moving to temporary, rented accommodation. We shall consider applications from Herefordshire residents who feel they have a special case.

Applicants must be studying full time for a Further Education qualification.

Please remember that each application is judged on the basis of ‘relative financial need’ and that not all applications will be successful. Applicants in receipt of Welfare Benefits will be required to show proof of current benefit payments. Learners are advised that any awards made, may affect their own or parent’s entitlement to means tested state benefits. Money shall be paid directly to the Landlord one term in advance.

Applicants must provide evidence of income and living expenses. The continued payment of an award depends on a minimum college attendance of 80% of course hours. If attendance falls below 80% the award may cease.

If you require any further information please contact Paul Bowyer in Student Support on 01432 845354 or at finance@hca.ac.uk
