Here they are, the new first years.  I decided that the first thing to do was to make sure they all had brand new Anvils hoodies, that they could wear for freshers’ week, ensuring that they can be spotted from a distance at any of this week’s events.  I can see the excitement, with a tinge of nervousness, in their eyes.  They look really committed and I think we are going to have three years of hard work and a lot of fun.

Freshers’ week involves a lot of icebreakers, including making the legendary spaghetti bridges; when working in teams, they need to construct a bridge using only two packets of spaghetti and one roll of masking tape. We then test for strength, which often ends in small pieces of spaghetti being found in corners of the room for several months, and of course aesthetics, with winning teams receiving copious quantities of chocolate.

This is swiftly followed by constructing blow up structures, this time in larger, cross-course teams with students from Contemporary Design Crafts and Jewellery Design.  Check out the six metre fish !
