A key theme on this fast moving course is to prepare all students for progression and life as an independent practitioner.  With this in mind, the students have already had two pop up exhibitions;  the first of which was to display their ‘fill a sketch book in a day’ work completed on a trip to Bristol to see the Richard Long exhibition at the Arnolfini Gallery in week 2 of the course.

Last week the Foundation Diploma and Portfolio pathway students worked on a live project based on the ‘Truisms’ of Jenny Holzer.  Following a short 3 day project which included self and peer assessment and reflective group dialogue, all students held a pop-up exhibition of their ideas development and final concepts in the Foundation Studios, displaying their personal responses to the work of the celebrated American artist.  A tiny selection of student work is featured below.

Sally responded to “It is better to be naïve than jaded” by projecting her mono printed texts.

To end this third week of the course, we went to visit Jenny Holzer’s ‘Softer Targets’ exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in Somerset; a new and world class commercial gallery.

We were very fortunate be accompanied on the trip by HCA Fellow and contemporary British Artist Clare Woods, and to have excellent educational tour guides who were able to steer all of the students through this landmark exhibition and answer any questions that they had about the work that was showcased.  The great weather and exceptional garden, designed by Dutch Landscape architect, Piet Oudolf was an added bonus.

Next month we are heading to Manchester, heading for the ‘Design your Future’ UCAS fair, visiting the award winning Whitworth Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Wakefield’s Hepworth Gallery…and working on a new series of exciting projects in the Foundation Studios and specialist workshops.
