This week was the opening of the second year Artist Blacksmith showcase at Llantarnam Grange Art Centre which marks the culmination of a second year live brief, to make work for their retail space. Six students were selected to exhibit and the work looked fabulous and it makes such a difference seeing work displayed within the context of a gallery, as opposed to studios and workshops. The showcase had some fantastic small halogen light bulbs and I was struck with the impact that strong lighting had on the work displayed.

Exhibiting students include Arran Lang, Ben Walker, Joel Black, Gabe Chaille, Aiden Beamish and Toby Forbes-Gower.

The exhibition is open until early May –see for details…

This live brief started with a lecture about working in galleries, site visits, time spent researching artists, exploring visual research, design development, sampling, maquette making, finishing work, presenting to clients and writing an artist statement, right through to designing and making the packaging to transport the work.

You can see from the photographs that the gallery was so impressed with the quality of the packaging designed that they chose to exhibit the packaging along with the final works.

This was a great live brief. A big thank you to Llantarnam Grange for their generosity and time in working with us and enormous congratulations to all the students who worked so hard and now have their work exhibited at a high profile venue.
