Course Overview

Our Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course was established in the early 1960’s, and has an excellent record and strong tradition of preparing students for undergraduate degree study and future careers in the creative arts. Validated by the University of the Arts London, the course has a fantastic reputation within the region and nationally.

The course lasts for one year, and aims to be a challenging but rewarding experience that will help you make your mind up about which specialist direction you wish to take in the future. The course will enable you to make the transition from school, college or another background into a wide range of employment opportunities in the creative arts industries via advanced study at Higher Education level.

The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is devised to enable you to learn through discovery and exploration. This is primarily achieved through your engagement with tutor led, studio-based projects, exploring exciting techniques and processes within our specialist workshops and through a creative practice programme of lectures and study visits.

A central aim of the course is about developing really strong visual communication skills and critical approaches to practice using relevant media, processes and materials in the realisation of creative ideas, all of which are generated through personal exploration and experimentation. Studying on the course will help you develop the ability to research, analyse and evaluate information and ideas in order to develop creative solutions. As a result of the course, you will be able to present these ideas in a considered and comprehensive portfolio as part of unique and personalised body of work.Assessment is an integral part of the learning process, and throughout the course you’ll receive continuous feedback about the development of your work, via formative and summative methods of assessment. Students regularly experience both individual and group tutorials, peer and self-assessment and through this develop the confidence to present their own work and to critically review the work of others.

The Foundation Diploma provides an excellent grounding and introduction for those students who wish to pursue a career in the creative arts industries. The vast majority of students chose to go on to study reputable degree courses throughout the UK including undergraduate study here at the College.

Any student who successfully completes this course and is recommended for a full-time degree course at Hereford College of Arts by their tutor (and is offered a place), will be guaranteed a generous bursary in their first year of study with a further financial benefits in each subsequent year.

Entry Requirements

  • There is an expectation that students will have achieved at least 5 GCSEs at  A-C grade (to include English & Maths), and a combination of AS and A-Levels qualifications (one in a creative subject).  Applicants that fall short of this entry requirement will still be considered with further discussion at the interview stage.

  • 1 A Level or AVCE or National Diploma or equivalent
  • Applicants whose first language is not English - proof of IELTS overall score of 5.0 or equivalent on enrolment
