Course Overview

From writing a blog about your work to working out design solutions or understanding the difference between net and gross, profit and loss – we believe that English and maths matters in the arts, which is why all our curriculum areas continue to integrate projects and outcomes that highlight the importance of numeracy and literacy skills.  Continuing to sharpen and improve your English and maths will give you an edge and the confidence to build on your qualifications.

English and maths are an integral part of all our courses. Students who do not yet have the necessary grades in both (grade C or above) will get additional teaching and study for either GCSE or Functional Skills, depending on prior GCSE grades.
 

GCSE English

This qualification will be taken by those students who achieved GCSE English at grade D. The qualification is designed to inspire and motivate students whilst enabling them to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse. A wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries will be studied with a focus on writing skills using a clear and coherent range of vocabulary and sentence structures.


GCSE Maths

The qualification will be taken by those students who achieved GCSE English at grade D. This qualification encourages students to develop confidence and a positive attitude towards maths and to recognise the significance of mathematics in their own lives and to society. Students will be supported through skills and understanding of methods and concepts as well as being able make informed decisions about the use of technology, the management of money and the necessary mathematical skills for everyday life.


Functional Skills

This qualification will be taken by those students who achieved GCSE English and/or maths at grade E or
below. Functional Skills are qualifications in English and maths that equip students with the practical skills needed to be confident and independent in education, work and everyday life.

English Functional skills includes: speaking, listening and communication, reading and writing.

Maths Functional Skills includes: money, time, data, measurements and problem-solving.
