Andrew Foster is a multi-award winning illustrator, educator and painter.
He exhibits nationally and internationally. His work is often autobiographical yet relevant to a wider audience and nearly always demonstrates his love of making.
Andrew began studying Graphic Design at Durham Technical College but ‘failed’ to gain a place on a degree course.
‘The problem was I was quite lazy, very opinionated and was not really sure if I wanted to do graphic design, illustration or painting. A year on the dole in which I drew and painted everyday confirmed that I loved making imagery which made me feel human. I didn’t know it then, but my work was about crossing boundaries, not been limited by what you should do but actually simply doing what you are compelled and inspired to do’.
In 1988, he went on to Harrow College, the only 3 year BA (Hons) course in Illustration at the time, where his views and unique visual approach were encouraged and further developed in 1991, whilst studying for an MA at Central St Martins School of Art & Design.
Teaching became an integral part of his practice and he always considers discussions with students as potentially exciting and a great privilege. He began his teaching career as at Hereford College of Arts in 1997 at a time when the College was establishing a higher education course in illustration. Andrew (Foz) was part of the team of illustrators and designers who set up the programme, and much of the original philosophy remains embedded in the course today. He then went on to teach at Camberwell College Arts as Subject Leader in Illustration and at Central St Martins School of Art & Design where he taught for 11 years.
Andrew is highly respected in arts education both as a teacher and practitioner. He is invited to lecture on a regular basis by leading academic and arts institutions throughout the UK.
Andrew is a leading figure in the illustration world and his professional practice includes clients such as: Kiehl’s, New Scientist, Esquire, The Lancet Journal, London Fashion Week, Granta, Guardian, Independent, Saatchi & Saatchi, BBDH, BBC, The South Bank and Liberty’s. He is a major contributor to conferences both nationally and internationally, ranging from Icon in New York, Untamed Tiger Falmouth, and Future of British Illustration, Pentagram London.
